Department Functions:

To provide citizens a convenient means of recycling and solid waste collection. We have fourteen recycling centers located throughout the county. Each recycling center provides bins to recycle newspaper, plastic, cardboard, yard waste, bulk waste, waste tires, used oil, glass, scrap metal, aluminum and steel cans, and batteries. The facilities collect approximately 14,000 tons of recyclables per year. The county has an Environmental Education Center located at the landfill. This center allows students, scouts and other organizations to learn about environmental issues.

Electronic Waste Facility:

Georgetown County’s Electronic Waste Facility is located at the Landfill Recycling Center on Hwy 51. Hours of operation are 7:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8:30 a. m. - 4:00 p.m. on Saturdays. Materials accepted include: Computers, VCRs, radios, copiers, scanners, printers, mobile phones, and cable boxes. Please see

Household Hazardous Waste Facility:

Georgetown County’s Household Hazardous Waste Facility is located at the Landfill Recycling Center on Hwy 51. The hours of operation are 7:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. on Saturdays. Materials accepted include: Paint products, cleaning products, lawn & garden care materials, automotive products and other miscellaneous products. Materials NOT accepted include: radioactive material, bio-hazardous or medical waste, explosives or ammunition, propane cylinders larger than 16.4oz, or asbestos.

Q: Where are the recycling centers located? When are the centers open?
A: Provided below in the Additional Information /Links section of this page is a link to a map, a listing of all the recycling centers, and hours of operation for each center.

Q: Does Georgetown County accept electronic waste?
A: Yes. Only residential electronic waste is accepted, one unit per household per day.

Q: Does Georgetown County accept paint?
A: Yes. Only residential paint waste is accepted. It can be brought to the Household Hazardous Waste Facility located at the Landfill Recycling Center.

Q: How do I prepare my yard waste?
A: Plastic bagged yard waste is banned from the recycling centers and the landfill. Kraft paper bags can be used. Call the Landfill office for more information (843-545-3443).

Q: How should I prepare recyclables?
A: Plastic, glass and metal cans should be rinsed, and cardboard boxes should be broken down.

Q: Where do I dispose of oil/gas mixtures from my boat or small equipment?
A: The Pawleys Island Recycling Center and the new Landfill Recycle center accept oil/gas mixtures.

Q: Can I tour the Environmental Services facility?
A: Yes. Citizens are welcome to tour the facility, please call 545-3443 in advance for approval.

Q: Is recycling mandatory in Georgetown County?
A: No, recycling is strongly encouraged, but is completely voluntary.

The Pleasant Hill recycling center has a large used farm oil container.
Cooking oil is now accepted at all centers (See attendant).

In an effort to reduce waste in Georgetown County, cooking oil is now being accepted for recycling at all of the County’s Recycling Centers including the landfill. All you need to do is bring your cooking oil in a disposable container to your nearest recycling center and we will do the rest.
