Department News:

A project to provide protection from hurricane damage for Fire/EMS stations within Georgetown County has just been completed. Hurricane shutters were installed on all stations in the Midway Fire Rescue District. Likewise, some of the critical stations for Georgetown County Fire/EMS had the shutters installed. Project cost totaled $159,885 with 87.5% of the cost paid by a federal approved grant with the required match paid for by each fire district. The County and S.C. Emergency Management Division assisted in seeking federal approval.

Another grant was approved for Georgetown County that will allow the installation of hurricane shutters on both of the approved Red Cross shelters within Georgetown County. By installing the shutters, protection of the evacuation facilities allows additional evacuees to use the shelter therefore increasing the numbers of citizens that can be sheltered.

A Fire/EMS Capital Improvement Study is currently being conducted for all areas of Georgetown County. This study resulted from the Capital Improvement Plan approved by Georgetown County Council. The CIP was a citizen driven plan as part of the Visions II planning held several years ago. The Fire/EMS study is expected to be completed by the end of November.

A new pilot program planned for Andrews High School will allow for Firefighter Training and Emergency Medical Training as an elective class for high school students. This program will allow students to have an opportunity to learn the skills necessary for a career in the Fire/EMS services. The students are Georgetown County residents and if they complete the program, they can seek jobs with Georgetown County Emergency Services.
