Redistricting is the process of drawing electoral district boundaries, usually in response to population changes determined by the results of the decennial census. In addition to equalizing the population of districts and complying with Federal requirements, criteria include attempting to create compact, contiguous districts, trying to keep political units and communities within a single district, and avoiding the drawing of boundaries for purposes of partisan advantage or incumbent protection.
Using state-of-the-art mapping technology, and with guidance from the South Carolina Office of Research and Statistics, Georgetown County Government has prepared redistricting plans for submission to the South Carolina state legislature for approval. Georgetown County is encouraging public input prior to the finalization of these district boundaries. Several public meetings have been scheduled throughout Georgetown County in order to allow citizens to review and comment on countywide redistricting plan options.
