Department Functions: | To maintain a composting facility creating a stable, soil enriching humus from raw organic waste.
Georgetown County creates enriched compost called "Georgetown Green" from a mixture of treated sludge received from Pawleys Island Wastewater Treatment Plant , the West Georgetown Wastewater Treatment Plant, and yard waste collected at the landfill. Constructed atop concrete pads, conditions of the compost are controlled with an aeration system. The temperature is monitored daily. After reaching a required temperature range and maintaining that range for a minimum of 21 days, the pile sits on the curing pad for 60 to 90 days. To ensure a quality product, the compost is screened and tested. |
Frequently Asked Questions: | Q: How much does Georgetown Green Cost?
A: Georgetown County sells enriched compost for $25.00 a ton.
One ton, depending upon moisture content will generally equal one Pick-Up truck bed.
Q: How do I use the enriched "Georgetown Green" compost?
A: Mix the enriched compost with soil as a soil amendment or top dress. It works well on all types of soil. It will bring sand and clay to a loam consistency.
Q: Is compost available in bags?
A: Not at this time.
Q: Is Georgetown Green safe for vegetables?
A: Yes. This compost is a Class "A" compost and is tested under United States Composting Council´s seal of Testing Assurance Program standards. The vegetables should be washed before eating, as with any garden product, but our compost is safe for use for ornamentals, shrubbery, trees, grass, and vegetables.
Q: Can Georgetown Green be used on vegetables?
A: Yes. The vegetables should be washed before eating, as with any garden product, but it is safe to use for ornamentals, shrubbery, trees, grass, and vegetables.
Q: What ratio should I use compost?
A: Generally, compost should be top dressed at 3-4 inches and worked into the soil. If you are mixing a large area, or using it for building a bed, mix approximately half and half compost to soil.
Q: What are the benefits of using compost?
A: Compost will bring either clay or sandy soil to a more loam-type consistency. It helps roots to develop and releases nutrients over a long period of time. Compost holds moisture like peat which helps plants resist drought conditions. You will notice a difference in plant growth in the first year. Used yearly, it will keep the soil in a condition that will promote healthy, disease-resistant plant growth.
Q: How is GeorgetownGreen made?
A: GeorgetownGreen is wastewater and water plant sludge mixed with wood chips and composted in forced-air windrows at a facility located at the county landfill property. The compost heats naturally to a temperature that kills the harmful bacteria. The temperature is monitored daily. This process takes 3-9 months. The material is sampled to make sure the product meets all permit requirements and the wood chips are screened out to produce a safe, dark, rich, almost odorless product.
Q: Why is GeorgetownGreen sold in bulk and not bagged?
A:The County is in the process of looking at several options for selling the large amounts of compost that will be produced by the facility. One option might be to sell to a company that will bag the compost for distribution. Another could be to sell to a company that will use the compost for erosion control in highway and construction projects. The County does not have the manpower to bag the compost ourselves at this time, therefore, bulk sales only are currently being offered. | Links:
