Georgetown County government strives to create affordable housing opportunities for residents through a partnership with the Lowcountry Housing Trust, Waccamaw Regional Council of Governments and the Frances P. Bunnelle Foundation. The partnership produced its first affordable housing rehabilitation project in 2013, when the Lowcountry Housing Trust closed a $375,000 loan agreement with Tri-County Regional Development Corporation. The nonprofit corporation obtained the loan to purchase and rehabilitate the Winyah Apartments, a 14-unit complex at 1604 Duke Street in Georgetown. Homes completed under the affordable housing program are available to residents earning at or below 80 percent of the area median income.
Georgetown County partnered with the Lowcountry Housing Trust in 2010 after recognizing the need for “workforce housing.” The Trust expanded its service area to include Georgetown County and — with the other partners in the initiative — has since been providing programming and funding opportunities to help residents purchase homes and increase the number of affordable homes available.
