The Treasurer’s Office sends notifications for and collects real and personal property taxes including vehicles, and oversees their disbursement to county government, municipalities, schools and special taxing districts in Georgetown County. The Treasurer’s Office also maintains records of revenues collected by these districts and invests any funds not immediately needed for disbursement.

The treasurer, an elected official, serves as the holding agent for funds of many county departments. These departments deposit their funds with the treasurer who invests these monies, along with tax collections, to generate additional revenues for the county in the form of interest earnings.

Online Payments:

We are pleased to announce that we now accept credit/debit card and electronic check payments on the Internet for vehicle taxes, and current real and personal tax payments. You will need to supply additional information about your auto insurance coverage on vehicle tax payments. During the regular business hours of the Georgetown County Treasurer’s Office, we will provide a computer, which you may use to make tax payment on the Internet. Computers may also be available for use at other county facilities.

We have chosen to use Official Payments Corp. to provide this credit card payment service. This company provides this service to many states, local governments and to the United States Internal Revenue Service.

Whenever a credit card is used for any purchase, the merchant does not receive the full amount that is charged to the credit card. Online businesses sometimes recover this cost by adding a "handling fee" to the cost of the merchandise ordered. To pay for this service, Official Payments Corp. will charge you a convenience fee. This fee will show up as a separate charge on your Official Payments confirmation; Georgetown County does not receive any part of this fee. This fee will not show on your paid Georgetown County tax receipt. A complete fee schedule follows this information. You will be informed of the amount of the fee before your transaction is completed and you will have an opportunity to terminate the transaction if you do not wish to accept the charge.

Please keep in mind that, per South Carolina state law, you cannot pay a current tax bill if there are outstanding prior year taxes on that same property. You may call the Delinquent Tax Department at Georgetown County and make arrangements to pay the Delinquent taxes online. Georgetown County will return any tax payment made for current taxes if there are prior year’s taxes outstanding. Any convenience fee paid will NOT be refunded.

The digital receipt that you print after making your payment is a confirmation of your payment, but this receipt is NOT acceptable at the DMV. You will be mailed an official tax receipt within three business days of your payment. If you pay over the Internet at the computer provided in the treasurer’s office, you may request that a paid receipt be printed for you after you complete the transaction.

PLEASE NOTE: Your account may NOT show this payment for up to three business days after you make your payment. Do NOT submit a second payment if you receive a digital receipt and confirmation number. This transaction date will be the payment date posted to your account.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: Why did the treasurer raise my taxes?
A: The treasurer does not determine property tax amounts. The amount of tax money needed is decided by each of the area’s taxing authorities. The Assessor’s Office determined appraisal values for real property while the Auditor's Office calculates the tax.

Q: Why did the treasurer send my bill to the wrong address?
A: The treasurer does not maintain property or owner records. The assessor and auditor maintain these records and are dependent on taxpayers to notify their offices of changes in address.

Q: How do I apply for a high mileage discount on my vehicle?
A: To apply for a high mileage appeal, mail or bring in a signed statement with exact mileage to the Auditor’s Office before the due date.

Q: How do I apply for a senior citizen discount on vehicle renewal fees?
A: If you are paying by mail, send a statement with your social security number requesting a senior citizen discount. We will complete and mail your application to the Department of Motor Vehicles. If you qualify, DMV will issue you a refund check. If you pay in person, notify the person posting your payment that you would like to apply for the senior citizen discount. DISCOUNT IS FOR DISCOUNTED REGISTRATION FEES ONLY, NOT TAXES.

Q: Why am I being charged taxes for the vehicle I just purchased? The dealer told me he would take care of tags and taxes.
A: The dealership is allowed to pick up your tags on a vehicle without paying local property taxes. When the dealer states that they are taking care of your taxes, they are referring to sales tax, which is paid at the local Department of Motor Vehicles.

Q: Why did I receive two tax notices for the same property?
A: The county assesses taxes on the real property, but if it is rental property, you are assessed on the furniture, fixtures, and equipment within that property. The Auditor’s Office is responsible for the value of that assessment.

Q: Where does the treasurer invest funds, and what are the constraints on investment of county monies?
A: Sections 12-45-220 and 6-5-10 of the S.C. Code of Laws limit the treasurer as to where public funds may be invested. These code sections allow investment:

  1. in obligations of the United States and its agencies with the United States that are fully guaranteed by the federal government;
  2. in bonds of certificates of indebtedness of the State of South Carolina and its agencies;
  3. in shares of any building and loan association insured by an agency of the United States; and
  4. with banking institutions of South Carolina.

Common Terms:

Execution: The process by which the treasurer submits all unpaid real property taxes to the Delinquent Tax Office for collection.

Penalty Date: The date on which penalties are levied due to non-payment of real property taxes.

Property Tax Receipt: A receipt provided to taxpayers that reflects the date and amount of their tax bill payment and other information relating to the property being taxed.

Receipt Number: A number assigned to each notice that is billed, which is used in posting payments and making references.

Interesting Facts:

  • In South Carolina, vehicle taxes are paid a year in advance.
  • If you are renewing your vehicle license tag, you can pay your taxes and renewal fee to the Treasurer’s Office and eliminate having to go to the DMV.
  • If you receive a tax notice for a boat or motor that you no longer own, you must notify the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources at P.O. Box 167, Columbia, S.C. 29202.
  • When paying your taxes, please make reference on your check to the receipt number. This reduces the possibility of errors in posting your payment.
  • If you receive a tax notice for a vehicle you no longer own, you will need to contact the Auditor’s Office.
